What makes autumn weddings so warm and romantic? Inspirations and tips for a fairytale wedding

Nowadays there is a lot of debate about autumn and winter weddings because they are a likely alternative for all couples forced to delay the wedding date because of the historical moment we are experiencing. However, are you really sure they should be considered a fallback? Do you think they are less valuable than weddings held in the warmer seasons?

I definitely don’t. Autumn weddings are often underestimated. Most brides fantasize for their wedding a warm spring or summer evening, an outdoor location and a whole world of peonies around the newlyweds. However, why not consider more original choices that will make your day even more special and romantic?

Deciding to have your wedding in autumn can be very charming, tender and undoubtedly poetic. The colours of nature, the warmth of a burning fireplace, the games of lights and candles, are just a few details that suggest the possibility of having an intimate and suggestive atmosphere. By reading the article you will truly understand what makes autumn weddings so special.

The “intimate climate” season

Speaking of climate, getting married in autumn can bring several advantages. Summer ceremonies can be exhausting and stressful due to the hot weather, which certainly affects some aspects of the event.

Dear brides, just think of your groom dressed in layers, waiting for you at the altar sweating, not only because of the intense emotion. Think of the difficulty of getting your make-up and hairstyle impeccable when exposed to high temperatures and humidity. And what about the mosquitoes and insects that will probably keep you company in the photos at sunset or during dinner?

If I think of the warm sun or the crisp, clean air of the October evenings in Sicily, therefore, I could not consider autumn to be less important than any season. Autumn weddings can boast a fairly mild climate and if it is true that the risk of rain is greater, it will be enough to work carefully on plan B.

As it happens during summer, every well planned event always includes a plan B in case of rain or bad weather conditions. A good Wedding Planner and Designer is capable of designing a good, if not better, plan B compared to a plan A!

.

Besides these purely climatic aspects, there is another reason that makes autumn an “intimate” moment of the year. Just as nature experiences a transformation during autumn, in the same way and at the same pace within each of us a process of change and aging takes place.

Let me get this right. As it is known in psychology, the mutation of external conditions (from the circadian cycle to the flow of the seasons) affects every individual on a psychophysiological level. Without going into detail, it is enough to know that this happens because variations, such as the variation of natural light, have effects on neurotransmitters and hormones and therefore on our body and our psyche.

Thus, there is a synchronic relationship between nature and psyche that leads each individual to experience an inner season. What happens in autumn?

Many associate this season with emotions such as melancholy and nostalgia linked to the feeling of loss, of falling, just as the leaves fall from the trees. Just think, however, that the “falling” of autumn is a change and means “giving way to” something new that must happen.

This is where you can find the positive dimension of inner autumn. The desire for introspection, the pleasure of enjoying a slow, calm, peaceful time. The impulse to embrace what is essential, to be together with those who really matter.

That’s why autumn weddings are languid and heartfelt, they are intimate, worthy of a real fairy tale.

The artist Mother Nature and the magical atmospheres

She, Mother Nature, would be to create enchanted atmospheres and scenery. And her palette of warm and varied colors: intense orange, dark red, (like the leaves of the trees), green, yellow ochre. I love to take care of all the details and make each project personal so I want to give you some ideas and suggestions to make your autumn wedding better than you could have wished for.

I interviewed Silvia Rubino, Interior and Events Designer and Alberto Cosenza, Wedding Photographer who, with their suggestions, will help you to better visualize how to achieve a dream wedding design and capture it with evocative images.

Hi Silvia, thanks for sharing with my newlyweds your inspirations for an autumn wedding! What are the color palettes you would like to suggest?

Hi Tania, thank you for inviting me! For those who will marry in autumn I can recommend to pick the colors of the earth such as terracotta or rust, one of the most ideal neutral colors for autumn. It’s a perfect color to add a retro touch and for an elegant and stylish rustic wedding!

These neutral colours match well the stronger ones such as burgundy, a shade of red with shades of purple that takes its name from Burgundy wine. There is also room for the Pantone colour of the year, the classic blue, which will continue to be very trendy next year.

The warm orange, marsala or chocolate tones match very well also with white or cream for a very elegant wedding. For those who prefer the less intense colours I suggest a delicate sage green combined with a feminine dusty rose

What a beautiful relaxing and romantic palette! The Wedding Concept is not only made of colors, what are your tips on the overall design and style of the event?

For those who have to redesign the wedding proposal today and have already chosen the location I suggest to look at it with a different perspective.

Outdoor spaces that can still be used are fine, but try to focus on the interior as well. Consider the architecture of the rooms, the covered terraces and evaluate all the elements. Look at the ceilings, look for corners or details that could become the protagonists of the set design.

Study a lighting plan that takes into account both the necessary light and mood lighting. With careful design and the right strategies, the lights alone can create a fairytale setting. Also consider the play of light to enhance the facade of the location, the walls, other parts of the place, the treetops. You are free to use candles, candelabra, lanterns that in summer can, in some cases, be annoying.

As for flowers, in an autumn wedding I recommend, for example, dahlias, zinnias, amaryllis, hydrangeas, carnations. The dried flowers are also trendy and striking, as well as the foliage that can be included in the table settings, and also in the bouquet! And also succulent plants and other elements such as apples, pomegranate, grapes, white pumpkins, chestnuts.

Hi Alberto, I’m glad you can offer your insight and expertise. What makes suggestive and exciting the photos of an autumn wedding?

Hello Tania, my pleasure! The autumn wedding has an intrinsic charm linked to the changing nature. Everything in autumn transforms. This apparently decadent season represents the first step towards the rebirth of nature. The colours become warmer, the hours of light gradually lessen, the sky becomes cloudy.

All this also delivers incredible photographic results. The autumn light is gentle, soft, never direct.  The carpets of leaves, the early sunset that fills a never completely clear sky with warm, orange light. Also think of the rough sea typical of the season. The salt that is released in the air changes the light and the photos appear as if they were veiled with some kind of magic. Everything in autumn helps creating light and dark games with a strong visual impact.

Such emotion! What advice do you feel like giving the newlyweds for their autumn weddings?

Live to the fullest the emotions that the season and your day evoke. Blend in with the context and be free to express what you feel. In autumn nature offers fairytale landscapes and scenery and with your genuine smile the photos will be special.

Always rely on a professional who with discretion and empathy, as well as with the right equipment, can narrate who you are and what you really felt!
